I remember some years ago when I was struggling for
admission. I always wish I knew all what I know now then, things would have
been different and I wouldn’t have experience all what I went through those
years. As a young vibrant student with ambition to further my education, I was
so passionate and full of courage and enthusiasm to go to school. I will always
go to tutorial classes and read together with some of my friends after class.
We were very happy and I so much believed that my admission was certain that
year.
Many times we will conduct oral test for ourselves
to measure and test our performance before JAMB. We were very serious and I was
the leader of the group because everybody believed that I am the most brilliant
among us. It is not something to argue about because it is very clear and
simple as I always teach everybody the difficult subjects such as Mathematics,
Physics and Chemistry. Whenever we go for our tutorial classes and our teacher
ask very difficult questions the only student who is expected to know the
answer is no one else but me and I always deliver. That made me more serious
than the rest and read a lot. I always read after school and every night. I
will set my alarm to wake up by 12:30am to read till 4a.m every day. Any day
that I stress myself too much and become very tired and wake up late than when
I’m suppose to wake up I will be very sad with myself because I will not be
able to cover all the topics that I want to read.
I always cover my entire syllabus before we get to
the middle of the term as I always read ahead of others. This made me stand out
of the crowd. All my teachers liked me and always encourage me with gift items.
I had my future in my hands and I so much believed that nothing can stop me
from doing well in JAMB and gain admission. I did all that is needed to be done
and take my study very serious. Life was so cool and my mind was made up to
further my education as many people were expecting me to move to school the
next year as a very brilliant boy.
When it was time for JAMB I applied and choose a
nearby center so that I can get to the center very early before the
commencement of the examination. The day of the examination came and I went to
the center very early even before the arrival of the examination officers. I
was calm and happy because I am very sure the exam is going to be a piece of
cake for me. If every other friend of mine are so confident about themselves
how much more myself? I kept on asking myself this same question and giving
myself assurance, hope and reason why I must perform very well in JAMB.
As soon as the exam officers came we were all ask to
move out of the exam hall and they began to call our names serially according
to our serial number. We were all ask to enter the hall with only our writing
materials and keep every other prohibited materials outside. When it got to my
turn I went in gently with my HB pencil and eraser. The exam started and it was
one of my easiest examinations so far. I came out of the hall with smile over
my face. I was very happy and smiling with everybody in my center. I answered
all the questions and believed in my heart that if I am to miss any question it
won’t be more than just 2 questions. I went home and met the rest of my friends
after they all returned from their exam centers. We had fun and shared our
experience about some of the things that happened. Some students that were caught
with expo and how they hand them over to police and all the things that
happened in our various centers.
Few weeks later JAMB announced the release of
results and we were all ask to check our results. I was very happy and full of
joy as I rushed to the cyber café in my street where I did my JAMB registration
to check my result. When I login my JAMB registration number nothing was
displayed. I tried again and what I saw gave me the worst surprise of my life.
Guess what? “No result found”. I was so confused. I don’t know if I should
start crying or laughing. I freeze for some seconds before regaining
consciousness. I went back home and broke the news to my parent. They encourage
me to be patient and check the next day because they knew how much effort I put
into studying and preparing for JAMB and they knew it will really affect me if
JAMB did not release my result.
I kept checking every week with the hope of seeing
my result but all my effort proved abortive as there was nothing I could do to
see my result. After some weeks and so many researches to find out the reason
behind the whole scenario I was made to understand that there was a problem
with my OMR sheet. I wasn’t the only candidate that year. There were many of us
like that and we were not so lucky because of lack of experience. I shaded my
OMR sheet the wrong way. Maybe it was too fainted or maybe I applied too much
pressure and allowed the pencil to emboss the paper to the extent that the
marking machine could not read the OMR sheet only God knows. I was given so
many reasons for what happened at the long run and everything just went down
like that. I was so sad and wept for days and sober for weeks like someone
mourning the death of a loved one.
I wasn’t so lucky that year because I didn’t have
the experience of how the examination really works. I never knew how to place
my pencil to give me the right result or the amount of pressure to apply on the
OMR sheet when shading my answers and all that. It was a complete failure due
to lack of knowledge and experience. The same thing happened to so many
students during last year JAMB CBT examination. Some were not familiar with how
to operate a computer because they have never operated a computer in their
entire life before the exam day. Some were not fast enough to meet up with time
and they were caught up in the middle. I remember the case of Ademola who

seconds for the exam to stop. He failed gallantly and with so much pain because
